The Sustainable Communities and Waste Hub is proud to announce that Dr. Emily Flies, Hub researcher and Co-lead of the Sustainable People-Environment Interactions project, has been awarded the Green Gown Award Australasia's Staff Champion for Sustainability.
The award recognises Dr. Flies’ contributions to sustainability through her work in teaching, research, mentorship and community engagement. It was presented during the 2024 Green Gown Awards Australasia, held alongside the ACTS (Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability) Conference in Launceston on 7 November.

Now in its 15th year, the Green Gown Awards Australasia highlight excellence in sustainability within the tertiary education sector. This year’s ceremony recognised 12 winners and 6 highly commended entries from 38 finalists across 18 institutions in Australia and New Zealand.
Dr. Flies’ recognition as a Staff Champion emphasises the importance of leadership in advancing sustainability initiatives. Her award joins other notable achievements from the evening, such as the University of Tasmania’s multiple awards for climate action, student engagement and impactful sustainability programs.
