The festive season often means more celebrations, decorations and gifting. But it can also contribute to an increase in microplastics.
At the Sustainable Communities and Waste Hub, we’re committed to understanding the sources, impacts and solutions to microplastic pollution.
Our IP2 Plastic and Other Materials research focuses on developing effective ways to monitor and reduce microplastic pollution in Australia, with a focus on tyre dust and synthetic grass.
This Christmas, we encourage you to help reduce microplastics with these simple tips:
- Wrap it right: Skip glittery and plastic-coated wrapping paper. Opt for reusable fabric wraps, kraft paper or upcycled materials like old magazines.
- Mindful gifting: Choose gifts made from natural, durable materials rather than synthetic plastics. Experiences or locally made products can also be thoughtful and sustainable options.
- Eco-friendly décor: Avoid plastic-based decorations and glitter. Instead, try natural materials like pinecones, dried fruit or handmade ornaments.
- Shop consciously: When buying clothes or accessories, look for natural fibres like cotton, wool or linen, which shed fewer microplastics and particles during washing.
- Reusable over disposable: Use real plates, cutlery and glasses for holiday gatherings instead of single-use plastics.
Small changes can make a big difference. Let’s celebrate a more sustainable Christmas while protecting our ecosystems from microplastic pollution.
