Recognising leadership in industrial ecology: Heinz Schandl awarded ISIE Society Prize

The Sustainable Communities and Waste Hub congratulates Heinz Schandl on receiving the 2025 Society Prize from the International Society for Industrial Ecology (ISIE). The award recognises outstanding contributions to the field of industrial ecology through research, practice and leadership, including his work in social and industrial metabolism, material flow analysis and systems-based sustainability science.

Heinz is based at CSIRO and co-leads the Hub’s Impact Priority 5 (IP5): Circular Economy and Waste. His work explores how environmental pressures, particularly from material use and waste, can be reduced while supporting prosperity, equity and resilience across Australian communities.

These themes are central to the Hub’s research and objectives. IP5 contributes directly to the Hub’s goal of improving the way Australia manages waste and transitions to a circular economy. Under Heinz’s leadership, the IP5 project brings together researchers, government and industry to co-design approaches that aim to develop more sustainable forms of economic activity.

Heinz said he was honoured and grateful to receive the award and acknowledged the collaborative efforts of research partners, policy colleagues and students who have contributed to his work.
