A new study published in Ambio introduces the Hub’s Wetland Wanderer Tool. It is the first auditing framework designed specifically to assess how wetlands support meaningful human-nature connection
While ecological values are monitored, there has been no systematic way to assess how wetlands foster public awareness, engagement and stewardship. This tool was developed through the Nature Connection project to respond to this gap in wetland understanding and management.
What the tool does
The Wetland Wanderer Tool evaluates wetlands across two core dimensions:
- Orientation: online presence, signage, education and outreach
- Access: infrastructure, safety, accessibility and facilities
It was developed through a systematic review, expert consultation and field testing, then applied across 21 Tasmanian wetlands as proof of concept.
The final product provides a structured field assessment covering domains such as signage, accessibility, natural values and First Nations site values.
Key findings and relevance
The Tasmanian audit revealed:
- Consistent shortfalls in online presence and education
- Moderate physical access, often car dependent
- Limited visibility of First Nations values
The tool provides a scalable framework to help managers identify gaps, prioritise improvements and integrate human-nature connection into wetland planning and conservation.
