Safe circular economy research moves into next phase

Work under Impact Priority 6: Safe circular economy is progressing, with a foundational project complete and new research projects now underway to support community engagement and practical action.

The completed project, Safe circular economy framework and scoping (IP6.05.01), establishes the direction for Impact Priority 6.

  • Examined how circular economy initiatives can better reflect community perspectives, risk and inclusion
  • Identified key barriers and enablers for participation
  • Analysed policy and regulatory gaps affecting community involvement

The project produced a scoping report outlining priority research directions, community needs and practical recommendations for government, councils and industry.

Two new projects are now building on this foundation:

Community Engagement for the Circular Economy Transition (IP6.05.01A) will develop a national model for inclusive, place-based engagement.

  • Working with policymakers, councils, industry and communities
  • Testing engagement approaches across urban, regional and rural areas
  • Producing a Community Engagement Framework and best practice guidance

Practical support for business circular economy transitions (IP6.05.03C) focuses on helping businesses put circular principles into practice:

  • Co-designing tools, templates and resources with business users
  • Developing an online platform to support circular economy decision-making

Together, this work strengthens the evidence base for safe and inclusive circular economy transitions, placing people, participation and practical implementation at the centre of Australia’s shift to a circular economy.
