The Indigenous Audience Communications Guide supports researchers to communicate research in ways that are respectful, relevant and more likely to reach Indigenous audiences. It responds to the need for research that is relevant to Indigenous people, lands and waters to be shared through approaches that go beyond standard academic and institutional channels. The guide was co-created by the Hub's Indigenous Facilitator, Mandy Downing and the Hub Communications Manager, Sarah Bassett.
Developed for researchers working on Sustainable Communities and Waste Hub projects, the guide outlines practical ways to strengthen communication with Indigenous audiences. It highlights the importance of reflecting on positionality, respecting Indigenous knowledge sovereignty, following local protocols and using trusted Indigenous media and community pathways.
The guide also offers practical advice on using plain language, visual storytelling, accessible formats and strengths-based framing. It encourages researchers to think carefully about who may be affected by or interested in their work, and how to communicate findings in ways that support community benefit, accountability and respectful relationships.
