It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the loss of Hub researcher Associate Professor Mohammad Swapan and his wife, Dr Sabrina Ahmed.
Swapan was a well-known researcher at Curtin University’s School of Design and the Built Environment and contributed significantly to the Sustainable Community and Waste Hub’s research.

Curtin University has highlighted Assoc Prof Swapan's significant contributions to planning in WA and internationally through his research and teaching.
His work had a strong focus on incorporating community participation in planning, sustainable cities and water sensitive urban design.
He helped strengthen international connections between planning research, practitioners and students - with a particular focus on Bangladesh and Australia.
He was recently awarded the PIA WA Planning Excellence award in research.

Swapan was actively involved in Project IP1.02.02: Water sensitive and liveable communities. Through this project, he co-led the National Survey on Regional and Remote Local Government Areas.
He also prepared and submitted a journal article on this important research. His work was accepted for presentation at the 2024 International Conference on Urban Affairs in New York.
Swapan's research will continue to be an important contribution to IP1 and the Hub.
His work, dedication and kindness made a lasting impact on his colleagues, the Bangladeshi community in Perth and many who had the privilege of knowing him.
