World Water Day: Improving Water Security for Regional and Remote Communities

On World Water Day 2025, we spotlight the Water Sensitive and Liveable Communities project, which is working to improve water security and resilience for regional and remote communities across Australia.

Led by Monash University, Curtin University and CSIRO as part of the National Environmental Science Program, the project is identifying key challenges and developing solutions tailored to local needs.

Key Challenges Identified

A 2023 nationwide survey of regional Local Government Areas (LGAs) highlighted:

  • Infrastructure limitations – aging or inadequate water systems
  • Resource constraints – lack of funding, expertise, or staff
  • Climate risks – increasing droughts and extreme weather affecting water supply

These insights will help inform policy recommendations and practical tools to support local decision-makers.

Integrating Indigenous Knowledge

A significant part of the project is recognising the role of First Nations water knowledge. The Aqua Nullius report explored:

  • The historical exclusion of Indigenous water rights.
  • The importance of incorporating Indigenous knowledge systems into modern water management.
  • Co-governance approaches to ensure long-term sustainability.

Supporting Resilient Communities

Through collaboration with local governments, researchers and communities, this project is helping to create:

  • More liveable and water-secure communities.
  • Stronger policies for sustainable water management.
  • Locally driven solutions that reflect real-world challenges.

As Australia faces increasing water security pressures and a changing climate, research like this is essential to ensuring long-term resilience.
